A little Lush to go with the Lean

April 12th, 2012 by Viviana 2 comments »

One of my lovely readers mentioned that they would like a bit of lush to go with their lean. Who am I to argue, we all want a bit of lush in our lives. The conundrum came with trying to think of what lush is to me at this point of my ingrained frugality.

I tried to think of the lushest place that is not fashion or beauty based and came up with Whole Foods. To my American readers, Whole Foods in London is like no other food store.  It is food porn, everything is perfect and expensive.

I did buy a rib of beef for our Christmas dinner at Whole Foods about three years ago, it was so pricey that I was afraid to cook it. Now we buy our Christmas dinner at Lidl (the past two years) and I have only crossed the extravagant threshold once since the rib of beef extravaganza.

This time I approached the gorgeous food with a discerning eye. I was looking for food ideas and not to overspend. I was very pleasantly surprised at what I found. I avoided the beautiful fruit and vegetables as they are more than double the price on what I buy in the market.   And did not dare to go near the meat or fish counter as I know I would want to fill an entire basket.

Where is there left to go at Whole Foods, you ask. The bulk dry goods area which is brilliant!  In the bulk area, you can buy as much of an item as you want so you can go home and experiment. What is better than that? It is cheaper than any of the big four supermarkets on quite a few items. I bought black beans, Israeli couscous and the very sexy sounding Beluga black lentils, all much cheaper than Tesco or Sainsburys.

I think beans and grains are less expensive because they are not a big part of the traditional British diet and Whole Foods is American.  I was overjoyed! It is difficult to find Israeli or giant cous cous and Beluga black lentils that are not produced by the quite pricey Merchant Gourmet.

As always, it is vital to know how much things cost at other outlets but finding interesting and inexpensive food at Whole Foods made me jump up and down inside.  I can feel lush when shopping at Whole Foods with the fancy paper shopping bags and the snobs of Kensington all while actually saving money.  What is better than that???

Have you ever tried to give yourself a treat and inadvertently saved money? I will try to think of some more lush ideas for you to go with the lean ones.

Menu Monday 9th April 2012

After a lovely Easter we still have some lamb leftover so I will be making it into a stew.

I recently discovered The Luna Cafe which is inspirational and has brilliant recipes.

Monday –  Creamy mushroom, pancetta and chilli penne

Tuesday – Moorish lamb and chickpea stew - this recipe looks great but I will to make some changes – first of all we don’t have that much lamb leftover and no homemade lamb stock but I do have lamb stock cubes and hot paprika.  If you try it please leave me a comment of any changes you had to make.

Wednesday – Early Spring salad of lentil and faro - I will use the rest of the chorizo from the lamb stew.

Thursday – Cheese burgers with latkes – I think I might need an easy cooking night.

Friday – Green Chile Mac and Cheese – I can’t wait to try this recipe, I think the green chile crema might become addictive.

Have a great week! Here in the UK, we have a four day weeks – hoowoo!

Lean Love

April 3rd, 2012 by Viviana 2 comments »

It is that time of year again – the day to tell and show our beloveds how much we adore them.  Unfortunately we are also in the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression so how do we show our love without breaking the bank?

Expressing love without spending a tremendous amount of money means probably not going out to dinner because how romantic is MacDonald’s?  I am proposing making a lovely, sexy dinner at home.

It is the little touches that make an evening special. Let’s start with the food – we are all being lean in our shopping and cooking therefore, we need to be a bit clever.  My chosen luxury element is truffle oil, which has been described as a very sensual ingredient.  I am planning to add it to mashed potatoes to make a simple dish, a bit sexy.  Truffle Oil will not break the bank, Waitrose sells it for £3.89 a bottle.  Unfortunately I could not find Truffle Oil at Tesco or Sainburys.

My menu will be a roast chicken, the sexy truffle mash and green vegetables, followed by a gooey chocolate pudding. The reason I have chosen this menu, is because I can pre-prepare the mash, pop the chicken in the oven then while making the gravy, steam the vegetables in a flash.  That will leave me more time with my beloved.

Setting the table is another way to make a home cooked meal special.  I will be setting my table with cloth napkins that can be found in charity shops.  I use cloth napkins most days because they are leaner than paper ones as you only pay for them once, you don’t throw them away after use and they add a bit of elegance to everyday life.  My other special item will be candles.  We all look so much more attractive in candle light.  I will buy lots of tea lights and dot them around the room.  When using candles make sure they are in proper holders so they will not set your house on fire or melt your dining table.

I must confess that I will be buying the chocolate pudding not making it, which is a cheat but at least I know it will work and I won’t have to be fumbling around the kitchen after dinner.

Since we have a week until love day do you have any more tips to make it special with still being Lean?

Rise and Shine Sleepy Head

April 2nd, 2012 by Viviana 4 comments »

coffee posterI must make a confession – I LOVE to sleep.  If sleeping were an Olympic sport, I am confident that I could go for the gold.  Well at least the silver, probably some spotty teenager would out sleep me.

Recently, I have been trying out a little experiment;  getting up 45 minutes earlier than usual and I am loving it.  No I am not nuts, yes I still love a lie in but I have discovered that I find it better to write before the day has a chance to wear me down. I adore the sense of acomplishment.

My new routine can benefit anyone not just bloggers.  I am happy if I do a load of laundry, clean the cat box, put stuff on eBay or just about anything I can tick off my list for the day.  One of the best ones  is to fire up the slow cooker before I go to work then when I get home dinner is just about ready.

A few days a week, I work at a fairly un-fulfilling office job, where the sense of accomplishment is pretty non-existent. You know how admin work  never ends. These are the days that it is especially important for me to do something creative and or constructive before I get to the office.

I have also recently started to use Mark Forster’s Autofocus, which is one of the simplest productivity systems ever. All you need is a notebook and a pen.  I love it as it is like stream of consciousness productivity. Make a list and tick it off. Have a look at the video in the link for a much better description.

I am always looking for bigger, better, faster, etc productivity tools, do you have any favourites? I am game to try almost anything to be more productive.

Menu Monday 2nd April 2012

Since I have not been working as much as I need to money has been quite tight. Hence,  I have been trying to convert my meat and potatoes man into eating more vegetarian fare. It is so much cheaper especially since we have a great fruit and vegetable market nearby.

Monday – Roast chicken, potatoes and fennel with a rocket salad (I got three bags at Tesco for 10p each)

Tuesday – Being taken out to eat, this is the first time since Valentine’s Day. I am very excited!

Wednesday - Aubergine pasta bake with pesto crust (phot0)- I actually made this Sunday night. Have a look at the photo. It was very tasty but next time I would put it in a flatter dish.

Thursday – Chicken burittos made with the leftover chicken from Monday. Clean the chicken after the main meal so it is easy to use later.  I am using black beans from the freezer.

Good Friday – Panko shrimp cakes with sriracha aioli - these work better if made left in the refrigerator for a few hours to set.

Have a great Easter holiday! For more menus go to OrgJunkie.

Shopping For You Spring 2012 Look

March 26th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

The sun is shining and we all want to get out of our very clean houses. I have been tidying and clearing out and what do we do after a big clear out? We make a list of the new stuff we want.

Last week in the post Spring 2012 Style Update, I listed the trends that are the easiest and least expensive to make it look like we are on trend for the new season.

The easier and most wearable trends, I think are coloured jeans and colour blocking, where you wear an outfit that has two very strong colours.  These trends you can easily put together by getting some bright jeans and add a stripy top.  Big chunky stripes seems to be the most effective to create the look.   Or a printed jacket over a solid coloured top and jeans, that match of course.

Florals are a big trend as well. This season’s flower print is bold and no shrinking violet (forgive  me for the pun). I would just get a great floral top to go with my coloured jeans.

Now I have my shopping list, how am I going to update my look with the least painful expenditure?  I am going to hit my trusty Net Voucher Codes.  I love saving money while  shopping.

As you know, I am a reluctant shopper, I always try to shop in my own closet first but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and spend a bit of money. Being Lean does not mean looking shabby. It is just the opposite, it is looking fabulous without spending a small fortune.

When shopping for clothing it is always the rule to spend a lot less on the spring/summer season than you would in the autumn/winter. The season is so much shorter and generally the clothing is made of less expensive fabrics.

What are you planning to buy to update your look?

Lean Times Tools

March 23rd, 2012 by Viviana 1 comment »

Being Lean should not be difficult or time consuming. I have a few tools I keep around the house to make living Lean a bit easier. I have small spatulas in different parts of the house – one in the bathroom to every last bit of skin cream out of jars and one in the kitchen to get out that last drop of a condiment. I love this set of different coloured spatulas. You can nominate a colour for the job it does or the room it lives in.

My other little tool is child’s safety scissors to cut the end of toothpaste tubes, that very expensive Aveda conditioner or moisturizer. You would be surprised how much more is hidden in the nozzle at the end of a tube.

Make it as easy as possible to be Lean – it is always easier to open a new tube or jar then to go into a different room to get the spatula or scissors.

Spring 2012 Style Update

March 23rd, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

Spring is quite an easy season to update your look since the fabric is more cotton than cashmere so much less expensive to add a piece or two.

For us real women, I have noticed a few style trends that would be pretty easy to incorporate into our wardrobes.  The other great thing about buying spring summer clothes it usually is more cost effective to buy items from cheaper labels as in general they are not made of the hardy construction of cold weather clothing.

Coloured Jeans – This is the first time since the 1980′s that jeans are bright.  Buy a pair of red and put it with last season’s Breton stripy top and you look spot on trend.

Colour Blocking – I love this trend! It easily works with the coloured jeans.  All you need to mixed solid coloured pieces and grab an accessory, like a scarf, a belt or even some chunky piece of jewellery to pull it together.

Florals – they were tons of matching tops and bottoms in the same floral print.  I don’t think this is a good idea as even the stick figure models looked a bit chunky on the catwalk.

This is a pretty and oh so summery trend. To make it work for us regular ladies, I would look for a 50′s shaped dress or a floral blouse. You don’t want to buy too much into this trend as it will be gone by mid July.

Pastels – the catwalk went quite soft in colour this season.  It was not the biggest of trends but if the pastel tones suit you I would get right in there.

Since pictures speak louder than words with most style, I have made a Spring 2012 Style Board. I am sorry that the pins are not in the order that I have written the trends but they are all captioned to match the trend.

What are you planning to add to your wardrobe this season?  I am going to replace my very worn Breton top, start to wear more jewellery as I have some great bright earring and maybe try to hunt down a floral dress but that might be a bit too girly for me.

Regardless of what the world of fashion tells us to like we must stay true to our own personal style. I guess this is a good time to tell you that I am planning a new ebook – The Stylish Frugalista.

Menu Monday 19th March 2012

March 19th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

This has been an exciting week, I have done the second Lean Times podcast about Meal Planning, which I do cringe when listening to it, but it took me a couple of days to actually record it. Who knew how hard it is to talk to a microphone for ten minutes. Now for the exciting bit – I am going to be on iTunes! Now total strangers can listen to me babble.

Monday – roast chicken with saffron orzo, asparagus.

Tuesday – Mexican Black Bean Chili with jalapeno corn muffins – this has been bounced for the past two weeks and I am definitely going to make it this week as the peppers are in the frig waiting.

Wednesday – Risotto with any veg I find in the market. Hopefully there will be portobello mushrooms in the market.

Thursday –  Impossibly Easy Cheeseburger Pie

Friday -  Roasted red pepper soup

Fabulous Festival!

March 16th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

I am very excited to have been included in the December Fabulous Festival, hosted by LivingAlmostLarge.  There are many great posts at this festival, my favourite was from Sarah Scarfford, who listed 50 Health and Beauty Products You Can Make at Home. I am planning on using some of her recipes to make holiday gift baskets.  Very Lean indeed.
