Menu Monday 12th March 2012

March 12th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

This week is another frugal one but luckily I some great buys at the market on Saturday including duck legs and fennel.  Also some Italian plum tomatoes to make sauce.

Monday – Five-spice duck legs with roasted fennel and rice. I think I might even try my hand at making duck stock.

Tuesday – Roast Chicken with sweet potato mash and broccoli

Wednesday – Portobello Mushrooms stuffed with Spinach, Quinoa and Pancetta  - I am not using the Merchant  Gourmet quinoa , I am using all generic products, so I have not fallen off the frugal wagon.

Thursday – Penne with fresh tomato chili sauce

Friday - Mexican Black Bean Chili (slow cooker) with jalapeno corn muffins – bounced from last week.

Cheap Clothing a Shopping Addict’s Crack

March 11th, 2012 by Viviana 6 comments »

What is wrong with a little cheap and cheerful clothing? Every girl would like to get a new dress for Saturday night, right?  Wrong! Don’t we ever get tired of consuming? I know of people, no it is not only women, that have so much stuff that they could not list a quarter of it.

Why have we forsaken the idea of owning a few, fabulous, quality pieces that could last for longer than two trips to the washing maching for a closet full of one wear items? I personally have better things to do with my time than trawl around the shops a couple of times a week.

I relish taking out my favourite cashmere sweater when the weather changes; it is like saying hello to an old friend. I can’t really say the same for my winter coat which has given me almost 10 years of loyal service.  Yes it is still stylish, Costume National, grey with a military feel but I think this year, I might go wild and buy a new coat since I wore it day in and day out in last year’s cold winter.

At the moment, I am in the middle of a big decluttering project, which as a former fashion stylist is not easy.  I have always been good at choosing the stylish over the trendy.  I just can’t seem to understand the person that loves to consume in shops like Primark. I have a very good friend that buys Primark ballet flats in what seems like bulk.  Once a pair looks a bit scruffy ( in about 5 wearings) she bins them and gets another pair.  Is all this shopping for inexpensive clothing a false ecomony? Why would someone one want several pair of cheap shoes when they could afford to buy a quality pair.

I am overjoyed when I find an item in my closet that is years old but still looks looks in good shape.  This summer I rediscovered a black blazer, I bought circa 1990 and it looked new to me again.  Somethings will stay in the closet longer than others and if you go for super high fashion items they either never really go out of style because they were never really in the style mainstream or they will look like a costume.

As we all know fashion is cyclical and everything comes back again so it is really worth it in the long run to buy clothes that are made of quality fabric and workmanship when we can afford it.  I know there are times we need a quick fix but we should not make it a regular thing.

Here is the REAL preachy part – consumers are buying tons of cheap clothes that they wear a few times then throw out.  Charity shops can not sell them on because of the terrible quality. They can not even be sent to deserving people in the third world, so the unwanted clothes get thrown into land fills and are messing up the environment. – End preaching.

What do you think about this issue?  Would you rather buy 5 cheap black tee shirts as opposed to one good one? Am I sprouting rubbish? Leave me a comment.

Take Inventory

March 11th, 2012 by Viviana 1 comment »

clipboardA few times a year, I like to take inventory of the stuff in my flat from the food cupboards to my lingerie draw.  I tend to do this with the change of the seasons.  It is so rewarding to start each season knowing just what you have and what you will need from dried porcini mushrooms to new black tights.

In the kitchen – I do a lot of  internet food shopping for my heavier items like tinned tomatoes and beans, pasta, rice etc which means sometimes I buy things  just in case, then I end up with a surplus. At the moment, I seem to have a surplus of tinned tomatoes because in the summer, I use more fresh.

The other section of the kitchen that it is vital to do an inventory is the freezer.  That is a sort of out of sight, out of mind situation; if i don’t do regular inventories, I end up with inedible blocks of ice.

In the dressing room – yes, wouldn’t it be grand to have a dressing room but alas I don’t so this section is really in the chest of drawers.  I have a look at all my lingerie – do the bras still fit, are they looking grey and horrible. Next it is on to the underwear, then the most crucial to me – the tights drawer.  Nothing makes me crosser on a cold winter’s  morning than not to find a decent pair of black tights.

I also at the beginning of autumn, have a look at my sweaters to make sure no nasty moths have gotten in but if they have (heaven forbid) I get out the moth balls and wash everything in baby shampoo.

The last part of my inventory takes place in the medicine cabinet.  I check that I have the necessary pain and cold medicine and of course, Band-aids.

Do you do an inventory on a regular basis?  It is amazing the things you will have forgotten that you bought especially if you are a reformed shopper. I have found sweaters that I had forgotten about that are just the ticket for the upcoming season.

Lean Reviews – Simply Wonderwoman

March 11th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

Here at The LeanTimes, I know time is money which is why I was so keen to review the book Simply Wonderwoman. Joanna Gosling, is a lady with a lot on her plate: husband, kids, and a pretty big job as a journalist and presenter.

One would think with all that going on in her life, she would go out and hire help. Instead she wrote this great book that is filled with easy solutions to life’s little problems. Joanna’s answers are all very common sense based and when you read this book, I promise you will slap your head and say ‘why didn’t I think of that?’

Some of the problems that Joanna takes on are: how to organize yourself by always carrying a pen, a notebook and your diary. If you write it down your won’t have to rely on your memory as all the information is in the notebook or diary.  Have a place for your keys either on a hook or in a bowl – say goodbye to running around like a manic before leaving the house.

I am very happy to say that Joanna is singing from the same hymm sheet regarding house cleaning as I do – use white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda for a majority of cleaning.  She also gives some great tips on keeping house broken down by rooms. She even has an easy way to clean the oven and everyone hates that job.

The second part of the book is a bit more fun as in not about chores. Joanna gives a millions of ideas from home DIY to beauty DIY. I am not going to tell all her ideas because this is a book you should really look at.

This would be a great Mother’s Day gift for any busy lady. (Hint hint)

Financial Baggage

March 6th, 2012 by Viviana 3 comments »

Years ago before we committed to a relationship, we worried about prospective partners having too much emotional baggage, now it seems we are worrying about financial baggage, both, theirs and ours.

We bring with us, student loans many years after we have graduated, credit card debt that we just can’t seem to rid ourselves of,  sort of like the memories of a very painful past relationship. Unfortunately we are still living with the relationships with our creditors so they are very much in our present.

Most people are bringing some sort of financial baggage to the relationship table.  It is almost easier to discuss your emotional past with someone you love, as you are talking about a situation that did not make you happy. You could always put a large percentage of the blame for the relationship not working out on your former partner since they are out of the picture.

Financial baggage is much more difficult to admit since it is the present situation and you are the only one to blame for it.  When do you bring up any financial mishaps? How do you tell someone that you really, really like that you spent too much on silly things like shoes?

What about if your situation is worse than overspending? What if you have been bankrupt or if your credit is in such a bad state that you would not be able to get a mortgage? This is a very tricky situation to be in as it could be a deal breaker. Some people see how we manage our financial commitments as an indicator of how we manage other aspects of our lives.

What if the person you are falling in love with tells you, they have been reckless with their finances, would that be a deal breaker for you? I know someone that lives in fear of her husband finding out about her credit card debt.  Is that any way to live?  Can we have a successful relationship while withholding that type of information or is that the thin end of the wedge.

I wish I had some good advice on this topic but the only thing to be said is to get out of debt and clear your credit report as soon as possible. I know that is rich to say when credit cards are charging exorbitant interest rates and we are in the misted of a crippling recession.

In a backwards way, I am lucky that my beloved and I have about the same amount of debt, so there is no accusations of who mismanaged their money more but we are still in a rotten place. We can’t afford to get married or really move forward with our life until we get the monkey off our backs.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this very tricky topic – please leave me a comment. This post is part of Women’s Money Week 2012.

Fashion Mistakes, I have made a few…

March 5th, 2012 by Viviana 4 comments »

acid-wash

Yes we have all bought things that don’t really suit us. After a bit of spring cleaning of my closet, I noticed a few items way in the back, that have never actually been on my back or my feet for that matter.

Keeping my fashion errors just makes me angry at myself for spending on items that I will probably never wear. When I am visiting my family in New York is when I seem to make the most mistakes. I blame it on the stylish seduction of Sex and the City and designer discount stores. I should know I am more of a punk at heart than a girlie girl.

I will be writing another post about finding your own style but if you need a place to start then look at my post entitled Personal Style. It will help you with a starting point to finding your most stylish self.

Once identified, the sartorial mistakes must go, but where? I have put some designer items on Ebay with some success, even though you will never get back what you originally paid. Unless perhaps it is so old that it looks new again to a younger audience then it really has been in the back of your closet for too long.

Another way I am going to experiment with is Swishing, which is an organised swapping party. Swishing is the brain child of Lucy Shea, who believes that we should be swapping instead of buying new to help the planet. I am going to one of Lucy’s events this week and will report back. I have also discovered the website, Posh-Swaps which seems to me a bit like Ebay but with set prices. Have you ever used Posh Swaps? How did you find it?

Another way to get rid of your fashion mistakes is to give them away to your friends but in these tough times it is nice to get something back. So hold a fashion swapping party. All you need is some fashionable friends with unwanted stuff and a few bottles of wine.

Do you have any other ways to get rid of your fashion mistakes?

By the way that is NOT me in the photo!

Frugal Not Frumpy, A Series – Know Your Palette

March 5th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

warm-cool-colorsI have found so many of my fashion mistakes are made by buying an item in the wrong colour, better to say a colour that does not suit me.  There are a few colour rules -

1. Figure out if you are a warm coloured or a cold coloured person.  This is as easy to figure out as to look at if you prefer gold to silver jewelry.  Usually if you like the look of gold next to your skin, you are a warm toned person and the opposite if you prefer silver. This also works with white versus cream; one looks fabulous and the other washes all the colour from your face.

2. Never wear the colour that you are.  The fabulous wardrobe czar, Annabel Hodin, said that to me and it totally holds true.  If you have pale skin and blond hair maybe yellow will most likely not be a good choice; you might look like a banana.

3.  As we get a bit older, we can not fall back on the black goes with everything.  Most people should wear a bit of colour next to their face, especially in the winter when we all looks a bit pale. If you look a television presenters, most of them wear a scarf or a flattering colour next to their faces.

4. Think about the items of clothing that get you the most compliments – if you always get a smile when you where green then maybe you should work on getting a few more green items in you wardrobe.

5. Red lipstick goes with almost everything!  The key is to find the right red lipstick.  I love MAC Viva Glam 1 because is suits so many complexions but if that one does not work for you.  Try out a new one every time you go through the cosmetic department then have a look at the colour when you are outside.  Shop lighting can be VERY deceiving and you could walk out of the shop £20 lighter with an orange mouth.

Have you had any colour disasters?  What colour makes your day when you put it on?  Leave me a comment.

Stock Piling or Hoarding? The Ugly Truth

March 5th, 2012 by Viviana 6 comments »

There has been so much talk about food prices rising, supermarkets gouging the consumer and possible shortages due to the extreme weather around the world, I have found myself starting to hoard food.  I first noticed myself doing this when after noticing prices going up at a vast rate.

My regular readers know that I love Lidl and make a trip there weekly.  About a month ago, I noticed 10p rises on two of the items I purchase regularly, rocket and goats cheese. Okay, so 10p is not that much but if you multiply it against ten items that is £2, not really that small a sum.  This immediately made me nervous, was my food budget going to go to hell in a handbasket?

I then read that because the Chinese have adapted a more Western diet (hello MacDonalds)  that the price of beef and wheat could go up quite sharply. The other factor in wheat’s price rise is apparently the wheat stocks in Russia are dwindling.

All this gloom and doom put me in slight panic mode.  I found myself adding extra ground beef and pasta to my usual Tesco delivery when it was on special offer.  Now I have a lot of beef in the freezer and pasta in the cupboard so I think we may be eating pasta Bolognese more than once in a while.

I must say I feel more secure when I have full cupboards.  I love it that I can whip up a meal without having to hit the shops.  I know these unplanned off the hoof meals most likely will not have a lot of fresh vegetables but they are still pretty good.  There is so much you can make with a can of tomatoes, pasta, maybe  some  type of bean.

I am getting a bit concerned that I am taking this stocking up to the extreme.  It can be embaressing when you open a cupboard and bags of fusilli fall out. I also stock up on more than just food, I grab quantities of toilet paper and shampoo when they are on sale.  My thinking is they are two things that you will always need and it is better to have a bargain then to miss a bargain.

Have you been reacting to increasing inflation by purchasing more than usual? Are you buying specific items, just in case?  Please leave me a comment, it would make me feel better not to be the only paranoid consumer.

Onwards and Upwards

March 5th, 2012 by Viviana No comments »

You have survived Christmas and the empties from your New Year’s Eve festivities are in the recycling bin so I guess it is the time to make our resolutions.

Here are a few of the bigger categories for me, not in any specific order.

SHOPPING – My first resolution is to plan ahead and to take advantage of every opportunity. The sales are on at the moment, so I am going to hit the shops to buy chocolates for Valentine’s Day.  Chocolates usually don’t come in Christmas boxes and if they do then re-box them. 14th of February is only six weeks away and the prices will be much dearer.

I am also going to be on the look out for any inexpensive little gift items that I can have on hand such as high quality bath products, lip-glosses etc but only purchase items that are REALLY marked down.

The same goes for wrapping paper; lots of holiday paper can be used for other occasions.  I try to buy one roll in white (good for wedding gifts) and one roll in an abstract motif.  These will keep me going throughout the year.  For girlie gifts, I wrap in little items in pages of old fashion magazines.

FOOD – Planning is the key to leading a lush Lean life in 2009; I will plan my meals around what is on offer and in season.  I will visit the supermarket in the evening when food is marked down and stuff my freezer with said items.

When I roast a chicken, I will make stock to make soup and sauces.

CLOTHING – I will polish my shoes and boots regularly to extend their looks and life span.  Repair and dry clean any clothing that needs it as soon as possible.  Hand wash all knits on a regular basis as moths love soiled sweaters.

I will always wash my lingerie in a mesh lingerie bag such as this one from Muji. Lingerie bags extends the life of your lingerie which is very Lean.

GRATITUDE – I will appreciate how lucky I really am, regardless of my financial situation.  I have a roof over my head, food in my freezer, the most wonderful man, lovely friends and family.  Who cares about the new ‘it’ bag.

Knowing all this, I will try to give something back by going through my clothing at least twice a year and donating the items that are not Ebay worthy to my local charity shop.

Charity shops cannot take bras but BreastTalk does.  They run a bra appeal that provides them to women, who can’t afford them around the world.  For every kilo collected BCR Textiles pays £1, which goes directly to the Breast Cancer Campaign.

Well that is pretty much my big Lean resolutions for 2009.  What are your big idea resolutions?  I do have more specific resolutions such as put more money towards my credit card debt, more money into my savings account and learn a new craft in 2009 but those are for another post.
