I thought it would be Etsy

I have opened an Etsy shop to selling handmade beaded earrings and some vintage finds.  When I started on this adventure I didn’t realize that there were millions of people selling on Etsy and they all seem to put a heck of a lot effort in the whole process.  I was silly and thought my product might speak for itself.

I learned to bead when I was in college in New York, working for the incredibly high-end jeweller Erickson Beamon.  I still work for them once in a while when they get a giant order in and it is all hands on deck.  So I do know how to bead, what I don’t know is how to take a decent photo of a pair of earrings – big problem!

I have written before about my snowflaking efforts but is it a good idea to spend money on the possibility of making money?  If I intend to follow on with this Etsy idea/plan, I will need to get a better camera and more beads to make more stock.

What do you think lovely readers?  Is it worth the money, time and energy?  I do love to make stuff and to hunt for fab vintage items to sell but lets face there is only so much time in a weekend or evenings after work.

What do you guys think, too many fingers in too many pies to make any real dough?  Or shake every tree to get some fruit?

PS You can see my Etsy store here. Feel free to comment, please I need the feedback.

Lean on Time

May 26th, 2009

nelson-ball-clock-multi

I have taken on a bit too much at the moment.  I am working on this blog, taking a sewing class, designing and making jewelry to sell on Etsy, decluttering my flat by selling stuff on Ebay, all while trying to scrape together enough money to pay the mortgage.    A lot of it is snowflaking because as a freelancer, my amount of work has gone down with the economy so I am being creative.

Most of the time it feels like my head is going to explode so I have decided to work on my time management and concentration.  Dumb Little Man has written a brilliant post on ways to stay focused.  I have noted and am starting to use a few of his tricks, especially the one about writing down the next days top five goals before bed.

Do you dear readers have any time management tricks?  I have taken out Time Management for Dummies from the library but have not found the time to read it. Please help me get organized so my head does not explode!

wonder-wheelIt’s Carnival Time Again

I am thrilled to have been included in the 9th Carnival of Pecuniary Delights hosted by Kelly at Almost Frugal, for my post Make do and Mend.  Thanks Kelly, you did a great job of picking posts.  I have also been included in the 179th Festival of Frugality hosted by Kyle at Suburban Dollar, for my How far would you go? Extreme Frugalism.

And now for a slightly different type of Carnival – the Make It From Scratch Carnival hosted by Ginger at Ginger Won’t Snap featured Make do and Mend yet again. This is a great carnival to get fabulous ideas about crafting, cooking,  and just doing it yourself.  Happy reading.

Extreme Earning

April 7th, 2009

rock-climbing

Many of us, frugal, financially strapped people have heard of the term ‘Snowflaking’ which in a nutshell is earning small increments of money to put towards our debts.  A great definition of the concept is here from the great blog, I’ve Paid For This Twice Already…

What happens if an unexpected expense arises, where regular snowflaking won’t produce enough money?  My snowflaking activities include taking online surveys, decluttering my flat then selling stuff on Ebay, Amazon and Green Metropolis but if you need a slightly bigger financial injection may I introduce to you Extreme Earning.

Extreme Earning is doing things for money that you would not ordinarily do such as

Selling your blood
Participating in Drug Testing
Donating sperm/ eggs
Participating in police identity parades
Nude Art modeling

There is a website, called Find Extra Work that has a very comprehensive list of all sorts of way to make some extra money. Do you have any ideas how to earn a larger snowflake?

Carnival News

I am very happy to have been included in the first Carnival of Pecuniary Delights. This is an especially interesting carnival because the posts do not have to be date revelant.  Any item you read should be of help regardless of when it was written.  Have a look, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
