The Sun’s £9.50 Holiday Challenge, en Garde

July 23rd, 2010

Holiday SunThe Lean Times have been approached to participate in The Sun’s £9.50 Holiday Challenge, which is where they want me to find something  more exciting and more fabulous than a holiday for the grand total of £9.50.  I must admit I was fairly stumped by this task but we never give up over here at The Lean Times.

I hit a few different internet deals – My City Deal, Wahanda and Living Social. All of these websites offer amazing deals based on how many they can sell in a set period of time.  Wahanda does health and beauty treatments where I found a kind of cool, but maybe kind of weird fish pedicure for the fab price of £9.00 (50% discount).  It did have a bit of a holiday feeling – feet in water surrounded by fish.

My City Deal does all sorts of deals from beauty to dining out, all at big discounts. Unfortunately the deal that was running today was out of the £9.50 ceiling.  My next port of call was Living Social, which yesterday had a great deal – Zoo Lates, where you get admission to the Friday night soiree at the London Zoo and a cocktail for the unbeatable price of £8.00.  I thought, this is it!  I found something fun, exciting and different for under £9.50, hooray! Then the deal ran out.  That is the thing with these deals you have to grab them when you see them.  So off I went searching again, this was definitely not an easy task.

I decided to take a different tack – maybe I should buy something that will last and make an impression on my life.  With my thinking cap on, I decided that the best way to spend my £9.50 was to buy a pedometer. This pedometer cost £9.49 so even got a penny change. I am hoping that if I use it on a daily basis I will look great for my holiday next year.

Preparing for the Possible Double Dip

July 8th, 2010

DOUBLE DIP CONE These hazy days of sunshine brings thoughts of beaches, barbecues, and all around good times but what will this autumn bring?  Many things are easier in the summer such as eating fresh seasonal foods; the choices of fruits and vegetables are amazing.  Entertaining yourself is cheap too; grab a picnic, a blanket, your beloved and hit a local park in the evening. But what is in store for us on the road ahead?

The financial press has been sending out warning that things are not indeed rosy and we have some tough times in front of us.  Have you thought about it?  Taking any preparatory measures?

In my world, traditionally the months of July and August are usually the worst because I was mostly working in the fashion industry so this year I have diversified.  I am now working in two different fields so I won’t have the lull I used to get when the fashion world went on its long summer holiday.

OK, I have summer covered but what if autumn does bring a big, black economic cloud?  I have decided to expand my skill set.  When looking into needs versus wants, knowing that in bad times the wants go out the window, I decided to take a book keeping class.  I decided this because the world always needs number crunchers and there will always be people that are afraid of numbers.  Have you done anything to try to recession proof yourself?

I have always taken classes. I believe it is important to keep on learning but in the past the classes have been more for fun like sewing or even taking French.  The French has helped in my fashion work to a certain point but the sewing classes were for pure pleasure. Now I am going to dedicate one evening and a few hours a week to actually learning, a not so pleasurable skill.  I must admit, I am a bit nervous as to whether I can go the distance.  Fingers crossed.

A Little Play = Being More Productive

June 25th, 2010

game nightSince I started The Lean Times, I have been trying to push myself to always use my time in a constructive manner. I am always looking for ways to be more productive;  I listen to podcasts or audiobooks when I am taking public transportation as it is usually too crowded to read.  I find myself constantly thinking about what I should be doing, whether it is writing a post, putting something in the slow cooker, sewing, washing the cat,  etc – you get the idea.  I was exhausting myself and not really getting as much as I would like done.

Then one day on the tube, I saw someone playing Scrabble on their iphone and I immediately wanted that app.  I have found that for me,  if I take a bit of time out for fun, the more productive I can be.  I am now going to attempt to schedule (still a control freak) fun stuff.

I have several activities that I love but just have not made time for recently – reading fiction, watching films, listening to audiobooks that are not about personal finance.  I am sure there are a lot more but it has been awhile since I have given myself a break from trying to be productive.

Has any of my lovely readers found the same phenomenon that when you take a break, you actually get more real stuff done?  Also what are your favourite things to do in your down time, besides drink wine, of course.
